In order to deliver valuable IT services to constituents, institutions and organizations need to adopt the latest in open source portal technology. uPortal, a project of the Apereo Foundation, meets this business challenge. uPortal aggregates the collection of back-end applications into a consolidated user experience. Leveraging the right portal technology can transform the online portal into an essential vehicle for achieving and driving the institution's or organization’s mission and critical initiatives. Selecting the appropriate framework is an exercise in determining which portal solution has the optimum fit for the campus or work environment and provides the level of control that the IT department requires.

What is uPortal?

uPortal is a secure, horizontal integration platform designed to integrate and aggregate information from multiple applications. uPortal provides three fundamental components: enterprise framework, soffits (support for new content types - available with uPortal 5) and/or portlets (rendered as small windows of content that appear on a portal page), and development tools. It is the leading open source enterprise portal framework built by and for the higher education community. uPortal continues to evolve through contributions from its global community and is supported by resources, grants, donations, and memberships fees from academic institutions, commercial affiliates, and non-profit foundations. uPortal is built on open standards-based technologies such as Java and XML, and enables easy, standards-based integration with authentication and security infrastructures, single sign-on secure access, campus applications, web-based content, and end user customization. It is one of the most widely deployed open source enterprise portal frameworks, having been adopted by hundreds of institutions and the eResearch community, worldwide.

uPortal 5 offers many significant improvements over previous versions. New features include a modernized build and deploy process; cloud-friendly updates; Soffits (support for new types of content); a reduced learning curve for easier adoption and deployment; and WCAG 2.0 Level AA Accessibility. This latest version significantly enhances uPortal's ability to aggregate and personalize data from a variety of campus systems. uPortal 5 provides an institution's users with a central hub for accessing digital platforms and content.

History of uPortal

In 2001, a group of 20 institutions, including Princeton, Yale, Cornell, Brown, Delaware, University of British Columbia, Cal Poly, Columbia, Holy Cross, Georgetown, and Boston College, recognized the need to protect the institutional image, to exploit the potential of the portal, and to promote the use of Java technology.  Under the sponsorship of Sun Microsystems, these institutions formed the Java in Administration Special Interest Group (JASIG), now Jasig (no longer called Java in Administration Special Interest Group). Jasig merged with the Sakai Foundation to create the Apereo Foundation, which uPortal is now a sponsored project of. Securing a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, volunteers from Interactive Business Solutions (a company subsequently acquired by Unicon, Inc.) and the participating institutions developed a free and open source portal focused on the use cases of higher education.  The uPortal project has enjoyed considerable success with over 600 production deployments, and remains the most widely used open source portal in higher education. uMobile, another Apereo Foundation project, brought mobile capabilities to uPortal which include native app expeirence and native device integration.
