Unicon IAM Docker Images

June, 2017 - Unicon's IAM team has several Docker images* that our clients, and the public at large, may find beneficial. We have images for the Shibboleth IdP, Shibboleth SP, UNINETT SimpleSAMLphp, Internet2 Grouper, and Evolveum midPoint. With these images, deployers can easily stand up application instances for development work, testing, or even production use. Deployers just need to mount, or overlay via a new image layer, their specific configuration files, and start the container. The specific application will start-up and start serving requests.

Getting Started with AWS Lambda and Java

June, 2017 - AWS Lambda is a paradigm shift for constructing our web applications. Lambda enables us to run code without having to run and maintain a server. Unfortunately, paradigm shifts are always difficult to adapt to. Going through real examples helps tremendously with learning Lambda. This short blog will bring up a Hello World Lambda. We will also show a small bit of configuration in API Gateway.

May, 2017 - During a recent webinar I heard the presenter say that "when people talk about big data what they really mean is Hadoop." I'm not sure that is entirely accurate but I do understand where the presenter was coming from - most big data projects are utilizing Hadoop in some capacity. We see that here at Unicon in our Learning Analytics practice as well. All of our large scale learning analytics projects are using Hadoop or Hadoop ecosystem components.

uPortal Tech Keeps Up with the Times

February, 2017 - A few years ago, I sat in on a presentation where a portal vendor pitched their product as a modern replacement over a stagnant uPortal. Unfortunately, the vendor had not kept up on the uPortal project. uPortal had undergone a major release with lots of UI and front-end enhancements since they looked at it. The institution stayed with uPortal.

Confidence in Cloud Providers

February, 2017 - In just a few years, we have seen acceptance of public cloud shift fairly dramatically from concern and skepticism to eagerly embracing the opportunities afforded. Five years ago, many of our hosted clients wanted to know that Unicon (and indirectly, they) had physical control of the data, servers, and other infrastructure.
