The Unicon Story
Unicon was founded in May of 1993 as a UNIX system and software consulting company. Unicon's founders met while working at Arizona State University (ASU) in the Engineering Computer Services department. Corporations began calling ASU and requesting assistance for their UNIX systems. The founding members recognized this business opportunity and UNICON was formed as a UNIx CONsulting company. Over the years, we've developed a strong customer following, including higher education institutions, education technology companies, corporations, government entities, and nonprofit organizations. In the late ‘90s, we were retained by Cisco® Systems, Inc. to develop learning management technologies in support of its new Networking AcademyTM program. The program was the largest e-learning roll-out in the world at the time.
In 2002, we diversified by developing and marketing to the higher education market. In 2003, we acquired Interactive Business Solutions (IBS), a company that had an outstanding market presence and was well recognized in the uPortal® higher education community.
We entered the learning management system (LMS) market in 2004, and became one of the first Sakai® Commercial Affiliates.
In 2005, we completed a number of projects for higher education and related businesses. Some of these projects were for publishers, including three homework management systems. By working closely with clients, we developed insight into the business challenges facing institutions and corporations, especially in the areas of digital content delivery and learning technology.
In 2007, we introduced our innovative Cooperative Support (now Open Source Support) program. The program provides commercial technical support for clients using open source projects and solutions.
By 2009, Unicon expanded its services to support other enterprise open source technologies that were in high demand among its customer base. These included other Java-based portals, web single sign-on (SSO), federated web SSO, email, online video delivery, and mobile computing. Unicon then expanded its services to include proprietary open source projects. This was evidenced by the introduction of Kaltura Video Platform, Liferay® Portal, and Zimbra® Collaboration Server.
In 2011, we expanded by offering services for open source federated web SSO, and became an Internet2® Member and InCommon® Affiliate and Participant. We also introduced services to deliver mobile computing on premise or via an application hosting model. Unicon is now a recognized leader in open source communities, mastering technologies for identity and access management, student success, mobile computing, learning management systems, learning analytics, portals, web content management, and online video. We support open standards and continue to make major contributions to them.
In 2013, we celebrated 20 years of providing top-notch services and support to institutions and organizations. That same year we formalized our service offerings for Hosting and Managed Services.
In 2014, Unicon became an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Advanced Consulting Partner, and was selected by the California Community Collleges (CCC) for portal software development services.
During the Spring of 2015, stakeholders of the CCC Common Assessment Initiative (CAI) made the recommendation to contract with Unicon for development of a custom assessment platform, CCCAssess.
