Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI)

Standards-Based Integrations of Applications and Learning Management Systems

Education technology publishers develop learning applications with the need to integrate them into popular learning management systems (LMS). In order for users to access the applications through the familiarity of the LMS they use routinely, a standards-based specification for integration is required, such as Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI). LTI allows for a reliable, effective integration resulting in seamless connection between the learning application and the educational environment (LMS).

LTI is a specification developed by the standards body IMS Global Learning Consortium. The goal of LTI is to provide a standard framework for integrating learning applications into the educational environment in a repeatable, scalable, simple way. This eliminates the need to develop and maintain custom integrations for each environment.

To fulfill the repeatable, scalable, and simple integration story, publishers building learning applications and vendors building learning management systems and portals are increasingly including native LTI support within their platforms. This creates a very straight-forward integration mechanism– simply exchange credentials and any custom parameters that need to be passed, and the handshake and data exchange is enabled.

This story resonates for Unicon’s publishing clients, as they have invested heavily in learning applications that complement their textbooks. Unicon has worked with these clients to integrate their learning applications with major learning management systems in the market: Sakai, Canvas, Desire2Learn, Moodle, Coursera, BrainHoney, and Blackboard Learn. Since LTI was used to facilitate these integrations, clients have saved time and reduced costs by taking advantage of a proven, effective industry standard.
