Unicon Enlisted to Develop OpenDashboard for Open Source Learning Analytics Process

Open Source Dashboard Organizes a Robust Learning Analytics Environment

Gilbert, AZ – July 14, 2015— Unicon, Inc., a leading IT consulting, services, and support provider specializing in open source for the education technology market, today announced development of OpenDashboard, an open source Dashboard to aid in the learning analytics process. OpenDashboard is a web application that provides a framework for displaying analytics visualizations and data views called “cards.” Cards represent a single discrete visualization or data view but share an API and data model.  OpenDashboard was funded by the Uniformed Services University (USU).

“OpenDashboard acts as a central hub in a learning analytics environment to display results and communicate needs,” said Kate Valenti, Senior Director, Integration Services, Unicon. “OpenDashboard encourages transparency and helps those invested in student success view results and take action based on data collected throughout the process.” 

The learning analytics process is composed of five distinct stages: “Collection,” in which learning activities are compiled as data is generated from an LMS or other learning environment; “Storage,” where these activities are recorded and stored; “Analysis,” in which models process data to identify at-risk students or make other predictions; “Action,” a stage where intervention techniques can be employed; and “Communication,” where dashboards are used to display end data results.

OpenDashboard is entering the Apereo Foundation’s incubation as a single component of the overall Apereo Learning Analytics Initiative (LAI). The Apereo LAI community consists of higher education professionals who share a passion for open source learning analytics projects and processes.
