PRESS RELEASE: Design with Liferay, Portal Leader launches new program to help users approaching EOL worldwide.

Tue, 06/08/2010 - 06:09

Design with Liferay
Portal Leader launches new program to help users approaching EOL worldwide.

RESTON, VA – [BUSINESS WIRE] – Liferay, Inc., today announced a new “Design with Liferay” program at its East Coast Symposium. The program addresses the recent consolidation trends in the portal market by providing a migration path for portal users facing end of feature life (EOL) with their existing platforms. As part of this campaign, Liferay also debuted Alloy UI, its new UI framework to further enhance ease of development and use.

To assist business and technical managers in their transition, Liferay today launched the “Design with Liferay” program (www.liferay.com/design). Customers of proprietary portal products may be eligible for a free year of support and can participate in a transition workshop to help guide their adoption of the Liferay platform. Many portal users are looking for a strategy to efficiently transition to a modern portal platform. Liferay, with a global open source community, innovative features, and lightweight development model, provides an extremely competitive option for these customers.

“Liferay Portal is well loved in enterprises worldwide, but customers need a safe and cost-effective plan to transition from their older platforms,” said Paul Hinz, Liferay’s Chief Marketing Officer. “While customers could choose to pay for a support contract after a product enters end of feature life, implementations become stagnant and tie up technical resources used to maintain deployments. Liferay partners and the Design with Liferay program will help enterprises restore competitiveness by investing in a modern platform for enterprise solutions.”

As part of this effort, Liferay also announced the immediate availability of Liferay Alloy UI. Developed in collaboration with Yahoo’s YUI project, Alloy UI provides a set of rich user interface components for quickly creating user-friendly portlets, widgets, and web applications. Alloy UI deals with the complexities of CSS, HTML, and Javascript, freeing developers to focus on business requirements and functionality. Alloy UI also helps solve some common cross-browser compatibility issues that typically consume project resources. The new library does not require a portal and can be used to develop components for any web application. Liferay Portal will standardize its front-end framework around Alloy UI, expanding the simplicity and capabilities of modern portal-based enterprise solutions.

“Alloy UI represents a new capability for web developers to simplify the development of rich UIs,” said Brian Chan, Liferay Portal’s creator and Chief Software Architect. “We are happy to have worked on this with the Yahoo team and feel it will be a great asset to help developers with their solutions.”

These announcements were broadcast in real-time via Liferay LIVE, the company’s innovative new channel for sharing knowledge with community members growing their understanding of the Liferay platform. Live-video presentations for business and technical audiences will replace the standard webinars offered by most companies. Participants will be able to interact and give feedback live during each session. Select sessions from the second day of the East Coast Conference will be broadcast via Liferay LIVE as well. For more information, please visit www.liferay.com/live.
